1. How often should I get my oil changed?
A: For a long time and sometimes still today, standard practice at many lube shops is to suggest oil changes every three months or 3,000 miles. In order to know when the best time to get your oil changed is, check the owner’s manual of your specific model for manufacturer-recommended intervals.
2. How do I know when I need new brakes?
A: It’s important to know when your brakes need servicing, as it can mean the difference between a safe stop and an accident. There are a few ways to tell when your brakes need some attention:
If you hear a squealing noise when you brake, it may be time to replace your brake pads. The squealing is caused by a metal tab on the brake pad wearing down, which is designed to act as a warning that the pad is getting thin.
If you feel vibration or pulsing in the pedal when you brake, it could be a sign of warped rotors. Rotors can warp from extended heavy braking, or from driving on uneven roads.
If your car pulls to one side when you brake, it could be an indication of a stuck caliper. A caliper houses the brake pads and when it gets stuck, it can cause the pads to wear unevenly, as well as making your car pull to one side.
If you have to press the pedal further down than usual to get your car to stop, that’s a sign that your brake fluid needs to be replaced. Over time, brake fluid can absorb water from the atmosphere, which lowers its boiling point. If the fluid boils, it will turn into gas and won’t be able to apply enough pressure to the brakes to stop the car.
3. What is a tune up? When will my vehicle need it?
A: A tune up is a service performed on a vehicle to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. During a tune up, the engine’s spark plugs and air filter are replaced and the engine’s fluids are checked and replenished. Depending on the type of vehicle, other components may also be inspected or serviced during a tune up.
Most vehicles will need a tune up when they reach approximately 100,000 miles or so. However, this varies depending on the type of vehicle and how it is driven. For example, if a vehicle is driven mostly in stop-and-go traffic, it may need a tune up more often than one that is driven mainly on highways. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific recommendations.
Performing regular tune ups helps to prevent major engine problems and can improve fuel economy. Tune ups can also be used to diagnose engine issues that may be developing, allowing them to be addressed before they cause major damage or become expensive to repair.
4. Why is my check engine light on? What should I do?
There are many potential reasons why your check engine light may be on. It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap, or it could be something more serious like an issue with your catalytic converter. If you’re unsure what the problem is, the best thing to do is take your car to a mechanic and have them run a diagnostic test. This will help determine the root cause of the problem and allow you to take the appropriate steps to fix it.
